The huge summer palace of El Escorial , built by King Philip II is also a monastery area dedicated to the monks of Saint Jeromis. The monastery has 2600 windows, 1200 doors and 86 staircases, which give an idea of its enormous scale. From the outside the monastery appears austere and heavy, but the interior is regal and full of valuable collections: paintings, books, treasures and legacies of Spanish royalty. The atmosphere becomes more subdued on entering the splendid royal tomb, where most of the former kings have a marble sarcophagus. Nearby is another awesome sight, Valle de los Caidos the valley of the fallen, built by General Franco to commemorate the victims of the civil war. It is generally accepted however that Franco had it built as a monument for himself, for future generations to remember him For a price quotation, please use the service request form. |
